Farm life… I still can’t call us a farm. We have a smallholding. Our farming friends are ‘real’ farmers. It is a way of life to them and it is their lively hoods. We are playing with it really and have an enormous amount of fun doing it. That’s not to say it isn’t hard. It jolly well is. This year has been the most unpleasant year for doing anything outside, and the most unrewarding! The rain has made life extremely difficult for all of us and the animals have been miserable to!!
Having animals that rely on you is a constant. There is no such thing as a day off or a lie in!! It is constant. Animals like routine and once established they do not like it to be changed. So…. Morning feeds, daily watering, restoring hay nets, clean water for the ducks to wash their eyes in, and vegetables etc to check on along with lunchtime treats for the chickens and walking the dogs are the main stay of our days.
We need to plan carefully, breeding programmes need to be considered, animal welfare needs to be top priority and this year in particular has been a challenge to say the least.
We grow vegetables for our family meals. We keep ducks and chickens for their wonderful eggs. We keep pigs for their company and amazing tasting meat. We keep the alpacas for their fabulous wool. Everything here has a purpose and we hope you will join in our excitement and come along and buy our products. We are excited to be able to share this with anyone who has the time to listen and encourage everyone to try any or all of this at home.
